Past Simple – lesson ideas for A1/A2 learners

Every new group of learners is a challenge for every teacher. While teaching, the first thing I feel I need to do is to take advantage of the best ideas I have already brought into play with my previous groups. But what sometimes happens is that they do not work with the new students. And what do I do in that case?  Well, frustration is the very first stage, but it comes together with the need to kill the misery and solve the problem, so I create something new. Today’s post is a remedy for such a situation. The aim is to practice the past simple tense through two group work activities which are supposed to motivate and encourage them to produce the language and have the students engage in the whole process. Moreover, I truly believe that team work is highly beneficial.
I also hope you will find the ideas useful in the teaching adventure with your students.

1 ‘Find your match activity’ – questions and answers in past simple – group work activity

‘Find your match activity’ – printable

Split your students into two groups A and B. Cut out the questions and give one slip to each student in group A. Do the same with the answers and give one to every B student.

Have all A students work together and unscramble their questions (each student gets one individual question to unscramble, but it would be a good idea to let them help one another).  Ask all B students to work together and complete their answers by putting the verbs in brackets in their correct past simple forms.

Once all the questions and answers are complete, ask all B students to stand in a line. Tell the A students to go from individual to individual in group B and ask their question until they find the right match – a student with the good answer. After all the students have found their match, they swap the slips of paper with their match and go back to their groups. Now the As have the answers and the Bs have the questions. Tell the A students to make up questions for the answers they have and ask the B students to write answers for the questions they had received. Students work together in their teams. Their sentences may vary from the original ones, but the point is to encourage them to produce the language in a communicative way and practice the past simple tense. The focus should not be merely remembering the sentences.

Split your learners into small groups. Distribute previously prepared sets of cards to the groups. Ask students in each team to put the cards in the following order:

PLACE              tourist attraction                    things to do at the place

The next stage for the teams is to write a diary like story about what places they visited and what things they did at the places. There are some requirements their stories should meet:

  • use the following sequencing words: first/ then/ next/ after that/ finally
  • use the verbs in their past simple forms
  • replace some words with pictures

How to start the story – example:

We started our journey on December 24. First, we visited Rovaniemi in Lapland where we explored Santa Claus village. We met

and got some wonderful Christmas presents for our  .
