Egzamin ósmoklasisty – exam preparation with Vocabulary Race Competition and Storyjumper book – “School Life”

Phrases related to school and education

Last time I worked on an idea for teaching some phrases related to family and social life. This time the plan is to teach and practice ten phrases relevant to school and education. A new addition to that plan is Vocabulary Race Competition. I truly believe that encouraging students to work in groups, cooperate in their teams and compete in a funny and friendly way is one of the keys to success. With the plan below, you may be a little bit like a coach letting your students discover, learn, practise and use the language.

  1. Introduction

Split the learners into small groups (2-4 students). Give each team a copy of the example sentences – worksheet 1 – example sentences with school life phrases  and two sets of cards: the phrases cards and the definitions cards – phrases and definitions cards . In order to elicit the meaning of the phrases in bold, ask the students to read and study the example sentences. Then, based on the sentences, have them match the phrases with their definitions.

In your group read and study the following sentences. Then match the phrases with their definitions.

1  You weren’t in school yesterday, and you skipped many lessons last week. If you keep playing truant, you will get in trouble.

2  If Sophie hadn’t passed the final exam, she wouldn’t have got the diploma.

3  Bradley failed his driving test again. He can’t drive!

4  I did badly in my last English test because I didn’t have time to do the revision. Fortunately, I have two weeks to retake the test.

5  Noah has been sick for a long time. Now he must catch up with all the school material.

6  Recently Mia has been falling behind in school and she’s already got some bad marks. What do you think we should do?

7  We should hand in our essays by the end of the week. There is not much time left.

8  Have they found out how much the cookery course is?

9  If you want to be fluent in Spanish, why don’t you go to Spain, take a full-time course and stay with a Spanish family?

10  I’ve just signed up for a cookery course for beginners. We start on Monday.

  1. Practice – Vocabulary Race Competition

Let the students stay in the same groups or form new ones. Give each group a stack of cards with the phrases written on them.

The layout can look like this:

The competition starts with you reading a definition of a phrase. Once students hear the definition, in their groups, they select the correct phrase from the cards. The designated student runs to the designated spot and puts the card with the correct phrase on the table.

The group with the winning student earns a point.
A new student is designated for the next round, and so on. The group with the most points wins.

  1. More practice

Working in groups, students complete the sentences using the words in brackets in their correct forms – worksheet 2 – complete_sentences_activity.

Complete the sentences. Use the words in brackets in their correct forms.

1 If Mark wants to fix the computer, first he (have/find out) ………………………………………………. what is wrong with it.
2 I need to work harder. I (not want/ fall behind) ………………………………………………. in school.
3 Julia was sick for three weeks, but today she’s back in school and I think that soon she (catch up with) ………………………………………………. the material.

You can check the answers with the whole class using the mini-book below. At that stage allow your learners to act as their own teachers and let them correct their papers with a different colour pen. They really like it.
