Stopniowanie przysłówków w języku angielskim opiera się głównie na końcówkach -er/-est albo na słowach more/the most. Wyjątki, takie jak well – better – the best, trzeba zapamiętać.
Nie należy mylić go z przymiotnikiem. W zdaniu She is a careful driver słowo careful opisuje rzeczownik, natomiast w She drives carefully przysłówek opisuje czasownik.
Krótkie przysłówki, zwykle jednosylabowe, otrzymują w stopniu wyższym końcówkę -er, a w najwyższym -est. Przy porównywaniu dwóch czynności używamy najczęściej than. Przysłówki zakończone na -ly oraz dłuższe formy stopniujemy za pomocą more i the most.
| Przysłówek | Stopień wyższy | Stopień najwyższy |
|---|---|---|
| fast | faster | the fastest |
| hard | harder | the hardest |
| early | earlier | the earliest |
| carefully | more carefully | the most carefully |
| slowly | more slowly | the most slowly |
Przykłady: He runs faster than his brother. oznacza „On biega szybciej niż jego brat”, a She works the most carefully in the team. – „Ona pracuje najstaranniej w zespole”. W konstrukcji równości używa się natomiast as … as, na przykład: Tom drives as carefully as Anna.
Stopniowanie nieregularne
Niektóre przysłówki nie przyjmują standardowych końcówek ani konstrukcji z more. Ich formy trzeba zapamiętać. W przypadku far można spotkać zarówno farther – the farthest, jak i further – the furthest.
|---|---|---|
| well | better | the best |
| badly | worse | the worst |
| far | farther/further | the farthest/the furthest |
| little | less | the least |
| much | more | the most |
Najczęstsze przykłady to: She sings better than me., He played the worst of all the contestants. oraz We travelled farther than last year.

Klucz odpowiedzi
Sprawdź odpowiedzi dopiero po samodzielnym rozwiązaniu wszystkich zdań:
- 1. faster
- 2. more quickly
- 3. harder
- 4. better
- 5. more slowly
- 6. the earliest
- 7. farther lub further
- 8. the most carefully
- 9. worse
- 10. earlier
- 11. later
- 12. the most beautifully
- 13. more clearly
- 14. more
- 15. more slowly
